Drawing on oral history interviews, this thesis examines the experiences of activists of the Swiss New Left with labour militancy in the factories during the long 1970s. Roughly, these activists can be divided into two groups: those who campaigned among workers from the outside or turned themselves into proletarians and began working in factories and those who tried to develop a continual strategy of campaigning among the rank and file. What unites both groups of activists is that they sought to distinguish themselves and their work from the established labour unions and based their political activism on a wider understanding of social emancipation. The analysis of their experiences on a subjective and biographical level aims at contributing to a lesser-known chapter of the historiography of the 68ers. In particular, it examines different factors that were important to the New Left, such as migration, the rebellion of the youth against an authoritarian understanding of society, workers’ unrest and the economic crisis.
